Our Homes

Maison Lucie-Bergeron

Thanks to the valuable contributions of numerous partners, Maison Lucie-Bergeron, located at 1805 Avenue de la Ronde in the Limoilou neighborhood, was acquired by the organization in 2013.

As the first service location opened by the organization, it houses the management team’s offices as well as most of the organization’s services. These include respite services, after-school care, daytime activities, and pedagogical days.

Thomas Boucher House

Operating since 2019, Thomas Boucher House is located at 1990 18th Street, also in the Limoilou neighborhood. Many partners contributed to the development and adaptation of this second service point, the first being Mr. Éric Boucher. “Fireflies,” Mr. Boucher made a substantial donation to the organization in 2018, making it possible to purchase and adapt the property.

Thomas Boucher House currently welcomes all our Indigenous residents for both short- and long-term stays.

Our Objectives

Promote the overall development of children

We provide youths with a warm, stimulating, enriching, safe environment that is adapted to each individual’s reality.

Create a harmonious and respectful living environment

A living environment that supports the development and full potential of each child, is enriching for staff, welcoming for parents, and meets their needs through an approach of continuous adjustments and ongoing improvement.

Respect differences and individual needs

We believe that each parent, each child, and each staff member is unique. Our services are therefore tailored to the characteristics and needs of everyone.

Our Mission

Driven by the vision of helping as many families as possible through evolving services that concretely meet their needs, the organization Maisons des Lucioles/Fireflies’ Homes has the following mission:

To offer parents of youth with multiple disabilities in the Québec City region respite care, daycare, adapted recreational activities, and short-term accommodation services to preserve family well-being and promote the child’s ability to remain in their natural environment.

To offer Indigenous youth with multiple disabilities short- and long-term accommodation services, as well as a sensory and developmental stimulation program, to facilitate access to the specialized educational and medical services available in the Capitale-Nationale region.

Our History

The organization Maisons des Lucioles/Fireflies’ Homes (official name since 2022, formerly La Maison des Petites Lucioles) was born from a pilot project conceived and led by Lucie Bergeron, founder of Vision Enfance et Famille and a social economy entrepreneur.

Her objective was to create a respite home for children with disabilities in Québec City, to develop expertise that could later be shared with Indigenous communities.

In response to the lack of similar services in the region, a group of parents of children with multiple disabilities mobilized. In 2008, the organization’s first service point opened in a small house on Marine Street, then occupied as a rental property. That same year, the organization welcomed its first Indigenous resident, marking the beginning of its commitment to First Nations communities.

In 2013, after months of searching, the organization purchased a house in the Limoilou neighborhood to accommodate children aged 0 to 12. This service point was named Maison Lucie-Bergeron in tribute to its founder, who passed away in 2023.

In April 2018, a second house was acquired thanks to an exceptional donation from Éric Boucher, the father of a “Firefly.” Renovated with the support of numerous partners, it began welcoming teenagers aged 13 to 21 in March 2019. It was named Maison Thomas-Boucher in tribute to the donor’s son.

In 2023–2024, the vocation of the service homes was reassessed: Maison Thomas-Boucher centralized services for permanent Indigenous residents, while Maison Lucie-Bergeron brought together respite care, daycare, and adapted recreational services for youth in the Capitale-Nationale region.

In September 2024, Le Sentier, a day center dedicated to adults aged 21 and over, was established at Maison Lucie-Bergeron, thereby completing the range of services for all age groups.

Our Values

Dedication

We devote our work to providing tailored services that promote the well-being and development of each of our Fireflies. We are committed and actively involved with families to offer support that meets their needs.

Adaptability

We demonstrate the ability to adapt to sometimes changing contexts, in order to respect the evolving nature of situations and individuals. For us, collaboration and teamwork are powerful drivers of this adaptability.

Openness to differences

We welcome, accept, and recognize the uniqueness of each Firefly and their family, with the goal of helping their differences shine.

Rigor

We demonstrate professional expertise and people skills that ensure high-quality service delivery, while respecting the specific needs of each Firefly and their family. We act with accuracy and logic in applying recommendations and in our follow-ups with our various partners.

Our Approach

With Participants

Our work with the participants we welcome is focused on an individualized, humanistic approach aimed at positive integration into the community. Indeed, Maisons des Lucioles/Fireflies’ Homes emphasizes the importance of adapting our actions and interventions to the personal pace of each Firefly. Since we consider each person to be unique, this adaptation must be based on a clear understanding of the specific strengths, needs, and interests of each Firefly. Guided by our values of openness and adaptability, we remain attentive to everyone’s emotional, cognitive, and relational availability, allowing them the freedom to choose whether to participate in activities. We also consider community outings to be a key intervention tool, enabling our Fireflies to experience a wide range of enriching adventures. We are committed to providing a warm and stimulating environment so that a disability is not a barrier to the growth and enjoyment of the young people we serve.

Each participant is welcomed as a whole person—with their strengths, challenges, needs, and interests.

With Families

With families, the approach of Maisons des Lucioles/Fireflies’ Homes is based on respecting the parents’ process of accepting the need for respite services in their lives. To achieve this, our approach advocates establishing a relationship of trust with each family, ensuring that our services complement the care provided by the family, and supporting parents in their needs. Professional recommendations, care protocols, and medical guidelines are thus rigorously followed. In addition, we develop and adapt our service offer so that it aligns with the specific needs of our families. This is why we strive to be there for parents as members of their own family would be: in everyday situations or in emergencies, we are committed to doing our utmost to help and support the parents of our Fireflies.

Each parent entrusts us with what is most precious to them. It is our responsibility to maintain this bond of trust so they can fully experience the benefits of respite care.

Our Team

Our team of staff members is composed of dedicated and professional individuals from a variety of fields of study: special education, psychoeducation, psychology, social work, nursing, school adaptation, and many others.

Thank you to our valued staff members!
